We've Got the Beat
I got to thinking about music, and how it's become a very personal thing. With iPods and earbuds, we don't really share music as much as we used to. On the upside, I suppose, you have fewer parents banging on the door, yelling, "Turn that garbage DOWN!" But I think you lose something, too. When I was a kid, my mom played the organ. She likes opera. So whenever I hear one of the songs she used to play, or catch strains of Luciano Pavarotti, I think of my mom. For my dad, it's Jim Reeves or Petula Clark. I asked my husband this question, and he said his mom used to play the radio when he and his brother were getting ready for school (I am thinking this is because she realized the TV would be a distraction for two boys), and Elton John brings back those days for him. I even asked my stepdaughters, who said that "In My Life" (he's a giant Beatles fan) and "That's My Daughter" make them think of their dad. For their mom, it's country music. And for me, it's the Proclaimers, which I got them hooked on when they were young.
So for Christmas a couple years ago, I asked for a speaker deck for my iPod. I wanted to share my music with Nicholas while he's still too young to hate it. I imagined him flashing back to me when he hears the Beatles (I'm a fanatic, too). Or Simon & Garfunkel. Or the Cranberries. Or even They Might Be Giants. I am hoping it's not a troublesome sign that so far, his favorite song - by far - is "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. He likes the lyrics about turning around because when we're dancing, we do just that.
Maybe, one day, when Nicholas hears that song on an oldies station, he'll remember dancing with his mom. Just like I remember painting my room with my dad every time I hear "Downtown." I'd be okay with that. To steal a line from the song, Nicholas is my "blue sky holiday."
