The BEST restaurant
One of the best parts of being a parent - besides getting to play with the toys - is seeing everything through the fresh, unjaded eyes of children.
The other day, we were in the checkout lane of Target, where we had gone to pick up a few things. "Mom!" Nicholas suddenly said urgently. "I just found the BEST restaurant!" He pointed over to the little eating area at the front of the store. I looked over, then looked down at his happy little face. It was lunchtime, so... We pushed our cart to a table and then - after he chatted up a woman putting together a jar of Hershey's kisses and scored himself two of them - ordered his lunch.
It wasn't anything special - a small hot dog, apples with caramel dip and chocolate milk with a crazy straw. To Nicholas, though, it might just as well have been the French Laundry. We sat together and talked while he ate. We talked about preschool and the kids' club at the gym and when Nicholas will get to see his sisters again (not soon enough for him, obviously).
It took maybe 20 minutes. It cost $3. It was the best part of my day.
As we cleaned up our table and made our way to the car, Nicholas took my hand. "I can't WAIT to show Daddy this place!" Daddy later said he can't wait, either. Smart man.
