Pondering the "Me Box"
Big happenings at our house this weekend. On Friday, Nicholas received the "Me Box" from his preschool. The idea was to put some things in there that represent Nicholas and what he likes to do. Then he would bring it in on Monday to show the items - and explain their meaning - to his classmates. Of course, within minutes of coming home, Nicholas had a crazy assortment of items in the box - golf balls, socks, mittens. He pretty much wanted to take everything he owns - and some stuff he doesn't - to school.
Sunday night, we emptied the box and started again, giving him either/or choices. He ended up with an album of family photographs, a pompom from a Fresno State football game, some crafts he made with his grandma, some seashells from a beach trip, his stuffed Lou Seal (the San Francisco Giants' mascot), and the book "Goodnight Moon." We were invited to come to school and watch him talk to his class. As I suspected, there was a wild attack of nerves. But they hit me, not my little boy. He did great, with some helpful prompts from his teacher. I loved watching him interact with the other children and talk about the things that are important to him.
It got me thinking about my own "Me Box." We don't do this as adults, but if I had the same assignment, what would go in there? Photos, obviously. The worn-out stuffed dog my dad gave me when I was little (he then spent years trying to find a replacement, to no avail). One of Nicholas' preemie onesies. A newspaper. A book. Probably "In Cold Blood" because it's my favorite, but I'd have to be careful to explain that's because the writing is incredible, not because I think killing a farm family is an excellent topic. A coffee cup. My first Mother's Day art projects from my stepdaughters. My Granny's chili recipe, in her writing. The necklace my dad gave my mom when she had me, which she gave me when I was about to have Nicholas. One of the riotous cards I routinely get from my mother-in-law. And, of course, a Fresno State pompom. I think all that stuff would fit.
Just like Nicholas, I would have a hard time editing it down; nobody - 3-year-old or 43-year-old - fits in a box, after all.
