Playing the ponies
Lsat weekend, we went to a pumpkin patch, something we do every October. At the Resendiz Fruit Barn outside Hughson, there's more than just pumpkins. They have pony rides and a hay maze as well as the various fruits and vegetebles and baked goods that make that place popular all year long.
This year, my stepdaughter Emily came up from college for the weekend and got to go with us. After we picked pumpkins, Nicholas wanted to check out the poines. And then he wanted to ride one. So we paid $5 and walked him around the property on a sweet little pony named Angel. He liked it so much he wanted to go again, and this time we got Peanut.
Two years ago, not so much. Nicholas is a veteran pony-at-the-fair rider, but those are enclosed spaces with nowhere for the poines to go other than aroudn in circles. We got him a ride at Resendiz, and he was having none of it. He pitched a fit when his dad tried to put him in the saddle. Having paid our $5, we couldn't just give up. So we - Nicholas, my husband, and his sisters, Emily and Hannah, took the pony for a walk, riderless, around the property. We looked ridiculous.
It reminded me of a story about my dad's mom. When he was small - and the baby of the family - she paid 25 cents for a week of preschool. He went one day and hated it. So my grandmother made his sister, my Aunt Estella, go for the rest of the week. Only Estella is the oldest of the kids, and was far removed from preschool years. But my grandmother was determined to get her money's worth.
I did something similar this year. We paid to go into the hay maze. Nicholas took one look and turned and ran out. Since we'd paid, I picked him up and carried him in, followed by poor Emily. Thing is, I'm pretty claustrophobic. It was dark in there. And tight. And hot. And we had a dinky flashlight. Nicholas was freaking out. I was quietly freaking out. And Emily was trying to just keep up with this tiny light. We got turned around and FINALLY came out the same way we went in after what seemed like hours.
So I get my grandmother's philosophy. Money is hard to come by, and you don't waste it. But sometimes, the smarter move is to just walk the pony.
