Nitpicky Lice

There you have it. A story on the wire today proclaims that schools aren't going to be nitpicky about kids coming to school with lice eggs in their hair.  They do draw the line at actual lice crawling around.  Stay away if that's the case.  What do you think?  Should kids with nits be allowed to stay in school?

I personally can't get past the ick factor on this one.  Plus, I wonder what our local school policies are.  Anyone know?

I think it's awful to allow kids to come to school with eggs in their hair.  After all, they're supposedly going to hatch right?  So are they going to keep a list of egg-carriers, and check them daily for crawlage?  (yes, I invented a word, ha ha).

I've been through the lice thing twice.  Once with my older stepdaughter, who we think caught it by wearing her friend's scarf, and again with my youngest daughter who we think may have gotten it staying with friends in a hotel room--she had slept on the couch, so not on "clean" sheets like those in the bed.

Both times I found out about the lice because I saw them scratching and looked!  Both times I notified the school immediately and suggested they check the rest of the class (that's how we found out the older daughter's friend also had lice).  When my youngest had it, nobody else in the class did (so that's where we came to the conclusion she might have gotten it in the hotel room, because she was away from the rest of our family as well and the only one to catch them).

Anyway, they are extremely tough to get rid of, as anyone who's been through it knows.  You have to treat multiple times and bag, boil or toss everything the kid comes into contact with.  I am fanatical about that stuff, and have had good success, but it would really disturb me to think that they'll "allow" this at school.

I'm not sure what the policies at my daughter's school are as it's private, but at her old school, they took reports of lice very seriously, and checked kids quite often.
