Call me naive, but I thought we would have at least a few years before we had to worry about girls. But the other day, when I walked into the kids' club at my gym to pick up Nicholas, the staff told me, "Guess what happened today?"

I froze. Nicholas has never had a problem in kids' club. He loves it, and the staff there rank high on the ever-growing list of people he likes better than me. But like most moms, I'd wager, several possibilities flew through my brain. He fell on his head. Someone hit him. He hit somoene. He broke something that's going to cost me several thousand dollars.

With trepidation, I asked, "What?"

"(Very cute, precocious little girl) kissed him."

Turns out Nicholas had built a castle out of some of the big, blocky pillows they have there, and the two of them sat in it. That's when "the kiss" happened. I was aware of this girl, of course. Nicholas has referred to her as his girlfriend on more than one occasion. Then again, he's also referred to me as his girlfriend, so I wasn't sure he was clear on the concept.

Now, of course, he tells everyone. "(Very cute, precocious little girl) kissed me!" My husband is very proud of his little boy, the player.

I have to admit, I feel the flutter of jealousy. I know I can't be his only girl forever, but couldn't we at least get to kindergarten?
