Go for launch
Nicholas' new thing is "big" hugs and kisses. That means he backs up a few feet - down a hallway, across a room, whatever's available - takes a running start and launches himself into the arms of his target. He knocked me over the other day when I picked him up at preschool; that was pretty. But it's hard to deny his joy at delivering these high-impact tokens of love. And it's pretty funny when he does it to his sisters - watching 35 pounds of kid flying into barely 100 pounds of college student cracks me up every time.
Over the weekend, we were in the front yard and Nicholas decided it was time for a "big" hug. He walked over to the neighbor's yard, turned and started running toward me. At that moment, the afternoon sun glinting off his flying hair, his wide smile and happy laugh, it felt like a glimpse of heaven. I'm often not very good about living "in the moment" but I sure was then. I know the time will come when Nicholas might not want to hug or kiss mom, or even be seen in public with me. Sooner rather than later, I'll probably become an embarrassment to him. But as he flew into my arms and threw his arms around me - I managed to stay upright this time - I knew I had a moment I'll treasure forever. I will take as many "big" hugs as I can get while I can still get 'em.
