A world of pressure from one little word: Mom
Here's the thing - things - about my mom: she's the smartest person I've ever met. She can handle just about any situation. She's the person you'd want next to you in the figurative foxhole. (My dad used to agree about how smart my mom is: "Look at who she married," he'd say.) I still count on my mom a lot. She and my mother-in-law are Nicholas' primary caretakers when my husband and I are at work. And my mom, a retired teacher, is back at work - with one prized student. Nicholas is well-spoken, knew his colors and shapes early and has started in on simple math, all thanks to his brilliant grandma.
If I sound slightly in awe of my mom, it's because I am. But now I'm a mom. When Nicholas wakes up sick in the middle of the night, he calls for me. When he gets a scrape, he calls for me. When he needs an answer, or a glass of milk, or a hug, he calls for me. And I'm clueless. Of course, I rush right to him, especially when he's sick. But I have no idea what I'm doing. I pick him up and sing to him - it's only when he's not feeling well he won't beg me to stop - and sooth him the best I can, but I don't know if I'm really helping.
Is this a mom secret? Is everybody this uncertain? Will Nicholas grow up viewing me the way I view my mom? Right now, he thinks I'm pretty cool most of the time. But he's 3. Hopefully I'll get this whole "mom" thing figured out before he realizes I'm such an amatuer.
