A grateful shout-out to those fine folks at Disney
My little boy watches television. I know that's pretty much going to doom his academic and personal development, but there it is. He's not plunked in front of the TV for hours at a time, but he does have his favorites. I remember when he was about 14 months old and I put him in front of Sesame Street for the first time so I could get something done. I felt like the world's worst mother. I've since gotten over it.
Nicholas loves "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" on Disney Junior. And since we went to Disneyland and saw a live show with "Little Einsteins" and "Handy Manny" he's picked up those, too. And I have to say, despite the fact the shows are repetitive in theme - Captain Hook steals a toy, someone gets in a situation that requires art and music or dance to escape, something around town breaks - I like these shows. They offer an oppotrunity to learn counting or music or Spanish with each episode. And clearly they're made by people who understand adults will be sitting through them with children. In fact, Nicholas' college-age sisters were well-acquainted with "Little Einsteins" before we were. And my husband has been watching the occasional "Phineas and Ferb" with Nicholas. I haven't seen that one, but he tells me it's a hoot.
It's a far cry from what I expected. I didn't watch a lot of TV as a little kid; I imagine my mom had something to say about that, but I also preferred sitting in a corner with a book. Which explains my horrible eyesight. But I have vivid memories of sitting through absolutely awful TV shows when I was of babysitting age (yes, they had TV back then). If I had to sit through "Care Bears and the Freeze Machine" one more time I would have gone utterly beserk.
I'm not saying that TV is the best activity for kids. I am happy that when I am going for a run, most of the time Nicholas will still want to shut it off and go with me. And that PlayDoh remains a bigger attraction. But for those times when we just need a little break, I'm happy to hang out with Jake and Izzy, Quincy and June, Manny and the tools. And there's no freeze machine in sight.
